Cinematography Schools
In the film industry, the cinematographer is responsible for the technical aspects of the images (lighting, lens choices, composition, exposure, filtration, film selection), but he or she also works closely with the director to ensure that the artistic aesthetics support the director's vision of the story. The cinematographer leads the camera, grip and lighting crews on a set and is responsible for planning every shot in a movie or television show, taking into consideration camera angles, lighting, and editing. In this way, videography is similar to cinematography, but as the videographer captures the story on electronic media rather than film, there are differences that the professional must understand.
While not all cinematographers and videographers have formal education in their fields, many professionals often do have some sort of training, usually through a cinematography or videography school. What to Expect from Cinematography School
Cinematography programs generally emphasize the fundamentals of visual storytelling. Students participate in classroom training, workshops, and exercises to provide practical experience and training. Cinematography students will learn to interpret scripts and present visually dramatic stories. The technical aspects of cinematography and videography will also be presented. Examples include camera operation, lenses, filters, film, videotape, exposure, composition, formats, location and studio techniques, and laboratory procedures. Videography students will further learn the basics of electronic and digital media production.
Potential Cinematography Opportunities
Completion of a cinematography or videography program will prepare the cinematographer for the movie or television industry, and may lead to a variety of opportunities to work on a camera crew on a film project. Initial job possibilities include work as a cinematographer, videographer, camera operator, camera assistant, or film loader.
