What to Expect from an Audio Production School
Through a combination of classroom and hands-on experience, an audio or music production school will provide students with the knowledge and skills needed to enter the field of audio production. Students will learn to handle the full spectrum of audio and music production, including dialogue, score, source music, sound effects, Foley and ambient sound. Topics covered at a sound production school may include operation of audio equipment, recording techniques, information technology, communication, acoustics, electronics, and music technology.
Potential Sound Production Opportunities
A graduate from an audio recording or production program will be skilled in the concepts of live sound, studio recording and audio production. Upon completion of the audio or music program, individuals will have the potential to find employment in audio production, music publishing, television or film production, or possibly even as a Foley artist*.
*Note that the creation of realistic sound effects through creative means is known in the industry as Foley and those who practice it as Foley artists. While the job may seem strange to outsiders, the Foley artist is an intensely creative individual with a keen understanding of sound recording nuances and techniques. While there aren’t many (if any) dedicated Foley schools out there, a film-oriented audio production school will have courses in sound effects and Foley, and that in combination with a lot of experimentation and a large bag of creative tricks may provide the basis for a “Foley reel” that can be shopped around to break into the field.
